Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Woodbridge, ON
What is a wisdom tooth?
A wisdom tooth is another name for the tooth that is located in the backmost part of the mouth. It is the molar tooth that is closest to the throat in the rear of the mouth. There are usually four wisdom teeth in the mouth and they are located in each quadrant of the mouth.
Why are extractions necessary?
Some patients can keep their wisdom teeth with no major issues for the majority of their life or their lifetime. Other patients can experience problems with their wisdom teeth or around the wisdom teeth. Patients who experience these issues are advised to have their wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth removal or removal of other teeth are also necessary to make space for orthodontic treatment or braces.
Wisdom Teeth Problems
If the jaw is too small, wisdom teeth can cause crowding of the teeth due to inadequate space in the jaw. Crowded teeth can make it harder to floss and brush properly, which in turn can lead to the buildup of plaque and other bacteria. Plaque buildup causes sore, tender, and bleeding gums.
Sometimes the wisdom teeth may erupt improperly into the mouth or may not erupt at all. Wisdom teeth that erupt improperly puts nearby teeth at risk for damage and infection if they are not removed early.
If wisdom teeth do not erupt fully above the gums, it can create an area where food and bacteria become trapped under the gum tissue. Wisdom teeth removal is recommended in cases like these to prevent gingivitis.
